Worship Arts and Education Specialist for Children and Youth

First Unitarian Church of Oakland

Status: Part time. Approximately 8 - 10 hours per week.

Salary: $170 per week.

Start and end Date: Late August 2009 – Mid June 2010. Contract position.

Summary of Position 

The Worship Arts and Education Specialist for Children and Youth works with the Senior Minister and the Family Ministry Coordinator to cultivate a deeper understanding of UU identity through worship arts and education. The Specialist works with the Senior Minister and lay teachers and leaders to create opportunities for children and youth to lead and participate in the worship life of the congregation. The Specialist is responsible for the day to day administration of the program as well as teaching as needed.  

 

Essential Functions: 

 

·        Meets weekly with Family Ministry Coordinator.

·        Meets with Senior Minister and other worship leaders as needed

·        Meets with the Worship Arts Team on a bi-monthly basis.

·         Collaborates with Senior Minister on creating six Intergenerational services (Water Communion, Halloween, Winter Solstice, Christmas Eve, Easter, Flower Communion). 

·        Coordinates, facilitates, and/or creates (with input), programs for children and youth with special attention to grades 5-12.

·        Works collaboratively with clergy, lay teachers, volunteers, and worship leaders to create regular opportunities for children and youth participation in Sunday worship.  

 

·        Prepares children, youth and their families for worship through periodic classes and rehearsals.

 

·        Communicates regularly with parents, children and youth through church publications, email, telephone calls and group meetings.

 

·        Maintains a data base of program participants.

 

·        Signs and abides by Code of Ethics statement of PCD “Safe Congregations” and the First Unitarian Church Staff Covenant.

Goals of the position:

 

            This position will contribute to the embodiment of the goals of the Dreaming Team Report (on church website) and the Congregation’s vision to deepen its commitments to counter oppression as a multiracial, multicultural, multigenerational congregation (also known as Vision 2012). 

 

Minimum Qualifications

·        Prior experience working with children and youth in a religious setting.

·        Experience with creating intergenerational worship.

·        Knowledge of Unitarian Universalist or liberal religious education philosophy and practices.

·        Background check required (at Church’s expense).

Director of Religious Education and Membership

Overview:     This position is identified in the Long Range Plan to grow to full time within three years.  Future responsibilities will center around Religious Education for children, youth and adults but responsibilities will include the unique set of skills and experience brought by the right candidate.  Religious Educators, Ministers and Students for Ministry are encouraged to apply.

Hours:           5/8 Time (25 hours per week)

(approximately 20 hours DRE; 5 hours Membership Coord.)

Job Responsibilities (20 hours)

  • Work with volunteers of Family Ministry Committee to prepare for an excellent Sunday morning experience for our children, families and volunteers.
  • Provide a Sunday Morning Presence, helping to greet, inform and acclimate new families.
  • Identify, coordinate and support teachers and volunteers.
  • Plan and help organize engaging lessons and activities for children.
  • Supervise nursery staff.  Work with Committee to support a vibrant childcare program.
  • Use verbal and written reports to communicate the achievements and needs of the program.
  • Design and implement Leadership Development Initiatives
  • Oversee procurement of supplies and resources for the program leaders.
  • Oversee budget.  Create both short-term and long-term budget planning.
  • Work with Family Ministry Committee to grow and support a youth program for teens.
  • Publicize programs outside of church to help grow RE and do outreach to diverse communities.
  • Use available technology (Email, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube etc.) to effectively support and communicate with families, volunteers and other staff.

 

Membership Services Coordination (5 hours)

  • Work with the Senior Minister, other staff persons and the chair of the Membership Committee to design and implement a hospitality education and training program.
  • Oversee a team of Membership Associates to optimize the Sunday morning experience of visitors.
  • Educate, train and involve members in being aware of visitor experience and taking ownership of the goals of increasing membership numbers and membership satisfaction levels.

 

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Administrative experience in a children and youth educational setting;
  • Successful completion of educational training or coursework in child development, teaching and learning styles, unique learning concerns (i.e. with special needs children and youth), and classroom management;
  • Experience in volunteer recruitment and/or program management, and in training others to provide youth programming.
  • Administrational and computer experience to collect, store and use member information.

UU Church of Marin

Youth Advisor / Consultant (part-time)

 

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin is seeking a Part-time paid Youth Advisor/Consultant to work with our senior high youth group (YRUU) starting mid-September of 2009. The job description is included below and compensation is $250/month (which includes prep time). An additional stipend of $250 is provided for the program at the annual retreat. Part-Time Paid Youth Consultant

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin

Job Description:

The Youth Consultant works collaboratively with other volunteer youth advisors to empower our YRUU to deepen their UU identities and explore and assume leadership roles within their group and the larger community. The Youth Consultant provides mentoring for the volunteer youth advisors and aids in the facilitation of the YRUU program at UUCM. Works closely with the DRE (Director of Religious Education) and the youth advisors to develop and expand the scope of the YRUU program. Assisting YRUU in coordinating social action/social service opportunities and creating positive bonding/community building experiences for YRUU is another aspect of this position. The Youth Consultant encourages YRUU to attend PCD/YRUU activities, such as CONS and other gatherings.

 

Basic Responsibilities:

*Meet with YRUU (along with volunteer youth advisor(s)) once a week (during the school year)

*Work collaboratively with Volunteer Youth Advisors.

*Report to DRE as directed including a weekly check-in

*Facilitate, create (with youth input), and oversee special program for youth for a weekend retreat (usually in May):

*Be available for overnights (usually 1or 2 per year)

*Abide by Code of Ethics statement of PCD “Safe Congregations”.

*Sign and abide by UUCM Teacher’s “Participation Covenant”

 

Qualities and skills preferred:

Reliable and good use of time management.

Prior experience leading/facilitating groups of youth.

Strong communication skills with youth and co-workers.
